Protect your PC utilizing
FREE Programs.

There are over 200 bogus security programs that promise to remove
Adware, Spyware, and Malware when in fact they just install more of it.
Here're three reputable sites where you can check if a program is bad.

A Big Geek's Favorite Free Computer Programs

CCleaner
One of the most useful, easy, and best of all a Free program for your computer.  CCleaner (Crap Cleaner) is a System Optimization tool that
removes unused and temporary files allowing Windows to run faster, more efficiently, and giving you more hard disk space.

RoboForm
If you asked Big Geek Daddy  which program makes his everyday computing experience faster, easier, and more secure then the answer is
easy:
RoboForm!   I've used it for over 3 years and love it.  It's an intuitive program with a helpful website and after several days of using
RoboForm it will become very familiar and easy to use.

It remembers passwords, so that I do not have to write them down. Not only does it fill in the passwords for you, it can do the whole login
thing: go to a site, fill forms, click the Login button. It also fills those ubiquitous web forms in one click.  I really like it and best of all,
it's completely FREE!  (There is a Pro version for users who need to store a lot of passwords).

Lastly, if you travel or use a computer outside your home to access sensitive sites that require passwords (banking, email, shopping, eBay,
etc.) then you really should be using
Pass2Go.   Why, because those computers at work and hotel lobbies could very well have
Keyloggers installed on them!
Pass2Go is a Portable version of RoboForm that works directly from a USB key, without a need to install it on
computer.  It gives users the ultimate in portability, security and ease of use.

Photo Story 3
A Free program from Microsoft you can use to create videos from pictures for playback on your computer or to send via email.

Image Resizer
Microsoft PowerToys are Free Programs to enhance the Windows experience. One I use on a regular basis is Image Resizer.  It's great if
you send photos via email or want to have a photo as your desktop wallpaper as it can reduce a 2 MB file down to less than 100 KB.

To use, simply download the program and double click on it to install.  It will appear as if nothing has been installed.  Choose an image file
on your computer and right click on it to see that
Resize Pictures option is there.  Click that and the rest is easy.  It won't change your original
file as it just creates a smaller version in the same folder.  Try it, you'll like it.

K-Lite Codec Pack
Will solve just about any problem you have with Codec Errors when viewing videos.

Google Earth and Picasa Photo Software
Explore, Search, and Discover the Earth.  With Picasa you can edit your photos removing Red Eye as well as organize and share them.

Control Start-Up Programs
Is your computer running slower than ever?  There's several possible causes including lack of RAM, Spyware, Adware, and other Start-Up
Programs running unknowingly.

Defragment Hard Drive
The more you use your PC, the more some files become broken into disparate parts scattered around your Hard Drive. Defragmenting
rearranges each file's pieces into a single continuous block for faster access.  Think of it as a workbench that starts out with everything in
place then gets messed up because the tools aren't put back where they belong.  The tools are there, they just take longer to find.
Pictures of Good, Bad, and Ugly Hard Drives.

Select Start (lower left corner of screen), Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter.
Highlight the drive that you want to check, and press the Defragment button.

If you'd like to Defrag easier and more efficiently than Windows built in Defrag utility then Big Geek Daddy suggests you try
the
Free Auslogics Disk Defrag
Paging and Registry file fragmentation can be one of the leading causes of performance degradation related to file fragmentation.
Big Geek Daddy suggests the
Free Auslogics Registry Defrag and  PageDefrag to help defrag these files.

Remove Unused Programs
Programs you don't use anymore are like friends who have overstayed their welcome: You're much happier after they leave! Not only will
removing unused software free up Hard Disk space, but it could make Windows faster and more reliable.

Select Start, Settings, Control Panel and double-click on Add/Remove Programs.
Choose the program you no longer want on your computer and select “Change/Remove”

Go Easy on the Eyes!
If you want to make your computing experience as easy on the eyes as possible then make sure your Refresh Rate is set high enough.

Right Click on your desktop
Select "Properties"
Select "Settings"
Select "Advanced" below the color quality bar
Select "Monitor"
Under Monitor settings you will see Screen Refresh Rate.  Set to
at least 75 Hertz and click OK.

If you are using an
LCD Flat Panel monitor then download ClearType Tuner.  Double Click on the file to install and run it.  Check the box to
turn on ClearType then run the wizard.  This will make reading print on your LCD much easier.

Utilize Proper Electrical Protection for PC's!

Utilize Windows XP System Restore in Time of Trouble
System Restore is a very useful feature in Windows XP that you can use to rollback your computer to an early state as in yesterday or a week
ago.  It can be useful in useful troubleshooting errors as well as infections.  The links below will provide more detail on how to use
System Restore.  Please note that System Restore does not work 100% of the time in solving an error or infection and is not a
substitute for a Backup of important files or for using proper security protection.
