A Big Geek's Favorite Free Computer Programs
CCleaner One of the most useful, easy, and best of all a Free program for your computer. CCleaner (Crap Cleaner) is a System Optimization tool that removes unused and temporary files allowing Windows to run faster, more efficiently, and giving you more hard disk space. View a Users Guide Here.
RoboForm If you asked Big Geek Daddy which program makes his everyday computing experience faster, easier, and more secure then the answer is easy: RoboForm! I've used it for over 3 years and love it. It's an intuitive program with a helpful website and after several days of using RoboForm it will become very familiar and easy to use.
It remembers passwords, so that I do not have to write them down. Not only does it fill in the passwords for you, it can do the whole login thing: go to a site, fill forms, click the Login button. It also fills those ubiquitous web forms in one click. I really like it and best of all, it's completely FREE! (There is a Pro version for users who need to store a lot of passwords).
Lastly, if you travel or use a computer outside your home to access sensitive sites that require passwords (banking, email, shopping, eBay, etc.) then you really should be using Pass2Go. Why, because those computers at work and hotel lobbies could very well have Keyloggers installed on them! Pass2Go is a Portable version of RoboForm that works directly from a USB key, without a need to install it on computer. It gives users the ultimate in portability, security and ease of use.
Photo Story 3 A Free program from Microsoft you can use to create videos from pictures for playback on your computer or to send via email.
Image Resizer Microsoft PowerToys are Free Programs to enhance the Windows experience. One I use on a regular basis is Image Resizer. It's great if you send photos via email or want to have a photo as your desktop wallpaper as it can reduce a 2 MB file down to less than 100 KB.
To use, simply download the program and double click on it to install. It will appear as if nothing has been installed. Choose an image file on your computer and right click on it to see that Resize Pictures option is there. Click that and the rest is easy. It won't change your original file as it just creates a smaller version in the same folder. Try it, you'll like it.
K-Lite Codec Pack Will solve just about any problem you have with Codec Errors when viewing videos.
Google Earth and Picasa Photo Software Explore, Search, and Discover the Earth. With Picasa you can edit your photos removing Red Eye as well as organize and share them.
